Christene Jayne Backhouse

Hello, I'm Christene. I'm a transgender woman who started her transition at the age of 58. Like many late bloomers, I found myself struggling to break free from the role that was expected of me.

When I joined TransWakefield as a member, I was searching for resources, and advice, to help me navigate this new chapter in my life. Along the way, I discovered a passion for helping others who were on their own transition journeys.

As I became more comfortable with myself, I worked alongside the previous chairperson of TransWakefield running meetings and support sessions. Eventually, I took over as Chair Person and had my own Martin Luther King moment: "I have a dream..." and all that. I wanted to create a safe and friendly environment where transgender people could learn to socialise with the public, and navigate the wider world.

Thanks to my efforts, and the support of our members, TransWakefield has become a thriving, and valuable, resource for the transgender community. I'm proud to have played a part in its success, and to continue supporting others on their own journeys.
